Sandnes – Day 20 of 55

In Sandnes we took a shuttle from the ship to the train station. Then went by rail to Stavanger to take a ferry to the Lysefjord, which we heard was a beautiful fjord to see. We met a couple from Pennsylvania and started up a great conversation.

According to the brochures, the ferry stops at two places for a view. The first stop is to look up at an outcropping (or projection) of a rock where, on the top, people often take pictures of themselves standing or sitting on the edge of the rock. Seems like a stupid idea. But the picture is nice view of the person on the rock looking at the fjord down below. I have included this picture.

The second stop is a waterfall that is supposed to be amazing to see.

The weather was overcast so the fjord wasn’t as pretty as we’d hoped, but the two stops were interesting to say the least. When we arrived at the first stop below the outcropping above, we looked up the cliff and saw a piece of rock (kind of) protruding out from the cliff wall. It was hard to tell. There was no one on top of the rock that we could see. And the scene looking up a cliff is very different from a scene looking down from the cliff into the fjord. But the ferry sat in the same spot for 10 minutes so we could get pictures looking up at (pretty much) nothing from the bottom of a cliff.

Our second stop was even worse. The waterfall was there all right, but it was just a trickle; that’s it. And people were taking pictures of the trickle while the ferry was parked for another 10 minutes. I made sure I took video of the trickle (see video of trickle).

By the time the ferry made it back to Stavanger it started raining. We had such a good time with the couple from Pennsylvania that they invited us to join them for lunch. We couldn’t stay because I was concerned that we’d have such a good time, we’d miss our train back to Sandnes and the ship.

The couple from Pennsylvania spent a couple of weeks driving around Norway. But they came across something fascinating. There was a traffic circle (or roundabout) inside a tunnel! We asked them to send us the pics so we could show our friends and claim that we saw it. I’m confessing that we didn’t actually see it.

Sandnes was our last stop. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the previous cruise on the Oceania had wonderful performances by singing and dancing people. The music was so-so. This Holland America cruise was the opposite. The music from the B.B. King Blues Band and the Rock band were fantastic. The performance and the comedian kind of sucked. We had a great time on both cruises. Each were exceptional in different respects. Now off to our land tour of Norway.
